NEW REPORT FROM TIME WARNER CABLE’S RESEARCH PROGRAM ADDRESSES STEM EDUCATION FOR LATINOS
Report Calls for Youth Engagement, Community Participation, Improvements in the Educational Pipeline
NEW YORK, July 11, 2014 -- Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) today announced the publication of STEM Education: A Bridge for Latinos to Opportunity and Success, which discusses the need to improve educational outcomes for Latinos in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The new report is the latest publication from Time Warner Cable’s Research Program on Digital Communications, which engages scholars to increase understanding of the benefits and challenges facing digital technologies in the home, office, classroom and community.
The report, authored by Luis Torres and his colleagues at the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), concludes that advancing a national goal of economic empowerment for Hispanics must involve STEM education, as the population remains underrepresented in a field with a high demand for skilled employees.
Fernando Laguarda, director of the program and Vice President for External Affairs and Policy Counselor at Time Warner Cable, said, “Time Warner Cable is a leader in STEM through our ongoing commitment to Connect a Million Minds (CAMM). CAMM has provided nationwide programming, showing kids how STEM can be fun. This report explains the importance of this type of informal engagement, but also examines the structural problems that contribute to Latino underrepresentation. We look forward to learning from this work and making further contributions to the communications and technology policy debate.”
Launched in February 2010, the TWC Research Program has made awards to leading researchers to encourage dialogue and debate on important topics in the digital communications arena.
